St Lucia is known for its twin Pitons ; Petit
Piton and Gros Piton and for excellent reasons. These 2 volcanic
mounds tower over St Lucia awash with bright green foliage and are
far more than 2,500 ft above sea level. The island has a thick
coating of tropical forest stuffed with a spread of exotic plants
and flowers and birds.
One of which, the St Lucia Parrot, is a
species original to St Lucia and is its countrywide bird. There are
great orchards in the north of the island growing bananas, coconuts,
mango and papaya. St Lucia is also home to the planet's only
drive-through volcano, where thick pools of lava bubbles on the
surface and the hint of sulphur is thick in the air. Made when a
volcanic dome collapsed, the crater is full of mineral deposits,
effervescent pools and steamy vents. If the bubbles get you craving
a Jacuzzi, try the mineral baths just outside of Soufriere.
The Diamond Botanical Gardens, Waterfall, Mineral Baths and Nature
Trail is a traveler complicated where you can walk thru the
stunning gardens commissioned by King Louis XIV and wash in the
mineral rich waters of the baths fed by sulphur streams. The
waterfall and nature walk are the ultimate way to enjoy your newly
revitalized body and the surroundings are simply pretty. Another
clue to St Lucia's volcanic past is the black beaches that swathe
parts of the island. There are sumptuously soft white sand beaches
which are good for sunbathers but the black ones are definitely the
more exotic of the 2. With rougher grains they are not as soft as
their white opposite numbers and due to their dark color they do
collect heat a lot quicker so be wary of burnt feet, but the
complete strangeness implies a great photograph and engaging story
to tell the people back home.
Another place definitely worth a visit is Pigeon Island ; the whole
island is protected as the Pigeon Island Countrywide Park and leads
to a great day excursion. On the island you can see the remains of a
Brit armed forces settlement made under Admiral George Rodney
including Fort Rodney and some barracks.
Pigeon Island is attached to St Lucia by a sandy causeway and is
often called Pigeon Point as, thanks to the causeway, it's not truly
an island any more. So if you're trying to find a Caribbean island
with a little individual skill, try St Lucia vacations and spend you
days lounging on the beach, snorkeling, driving thru a volcano and
trekking thru the rain forest. Isla Campbell writes for a digital
